Head Counselor in Summer Programs

Junior Achievement of South Florida (JA) inspires and prepares youth to succeed in a global economy. JA provides real-world training in financial literacy including budgeting, spending, investing and the use of credit; offers cutting-edge skill-building opportunities that enable young people to explore meaningful, productive careers; teaches students how to start businesses; and introduces entrepreneurial values that strengthen workplaces. Last year, with the help of over 7,100 trained corporate and community volunteers, JA delivered over 20 various programs to almost 50,000 students in classrooms throughout Broward and south Palm Beach counties and at JA World Huizenga Center at the Lillian S. Wells Pavilion, a first-class facility housing JA BizTown and JA Finance Park.

Position Description:

The Head Counselor will plan, lead and implement programs and experiences for children during the summer camp programs taking place at JA World Huizenga Center at the Lillian S. Wells Pavilion during June – August of 2019. They will oversee the general safety and skill growth of the participants in his/her group. The ideal candidate is organized, creative and energetic with a passion for children and for ensuring a fun camp environment for all children. The Head Counselor will report to the Director of Summer Camp.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with camp staff and LITs to plan, coordinate and implement camp curriculum.
  • Lead and support campers as they participate in age-appropriate activities, which may include but not limited to: arts and crafts; sports; science experiments; coding; financial literacy.
  • Responsible for the safety and whereabouts of your assigned campers at all times.
  • Ensure proper use of camp facilities by campers and assistant counselors, seeing that all areas are kept clean and organized.
  • Monitor campers to ensure compliance with camp rules and appropriate behavior.
  • Record and report incidents such as injury or rule violations to parents and to the Director of Summer Camp.
  • Attend weekly team meetings.
  • Assist with the inventory, storage and distribution of materials and supplies.
  • Maintain accurate camp records.
  • Know and understand all emergency procedures.
  • Other reasonable duties as assigned.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Teacher Certification highly preferred. Background working with ESE population a plus.
  • Experience overseeing groups of children (in schools, community organizations, etc.)
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbal and written.
  • Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Office Suite. Coding experience a plus.
  • Ability to pass a national and state background check.
  • Must be available Monday- Friday from June 17-August 9, 2019 (exception July 4-5) and for training the week of June 13, 2019, exact date TBD.

Schedule and Compensation:

  • $15 per hour / Hours per week will vary
  • Regular camp hours are 9am-3pm; Extended day hours are 8am-6pm. Lead Counselors will work approximately 35 hours per week between 8am-6pm. Weekly schedule is contingent on camper enrollment. Fulfilling responsibilities may require additional hours.
